Nearly Three Months

Written on February 15, 2009. Written by Jenny.

So, it’s been nearly three months since my husband and I made the difficult decision to give our cute little Tori to the animal shelter so that hopefully she could find a new, fabulous home. It’s been difficult. I keep finding myself feeling like we somehow failed her. That we could have done something different to make things better. But after over a year of struggles, and hundreds of dollars in cleaning supplies and new flooring (due to her insistence on peeing in our formal dining room), we finally forced ourselves to give in to the inevitable - Tori loved us, but she wasn’t happy.

It was very disappointing adding the “The Undone” category to my list this soon in the game, and for something so sad and so depressing. I miss her often. I think about her a lot and wonder if there was something we could do…but deep down in my heart, I know there was nothing we could do.

My husband keeps reminding me that we could call the shelter and ask if they found her a home yet. But I can’t seem to get myself to go along with that idea because, in my mind, there is no good answer to that question. If they haven’t found her a home yet, I’ll be sad knowing that she is still sitting there, in the cage, waiting for someone (me) to come and bring her home. If they haven’t found her a home yet, she could be euthanized. Or, they have found her a home and me, in my selfish mind, would be sad that her new home couldn’t be with us.

So I guess in this case, I’m just better off not knowing. But that doesn’t make the hurting go away any faster.

It’s Bad For Ya

Written on February 11, 2008. Written by Jenny.

On February 2nd, I was able to cross off yet another item on my 101 in 1001. I was lucky enough to finally see George Carlin live. It is something that I’ve wanted to do for over ten years (yes, I was a Carlin fan at a very young age!) and this month he came to our little corner of the Pacific Northwest and played to a sold-out audience at our local theater. It was quite an experience! Even though he’s in his seventies, he still has all of the energy and enthusiasm that he had back in the 70s. I was very impressed. He really is “that good” in real life. I haven’t laughed so hard in…well, I don’t remember how long, and I was probably laughing at a Carlin DVD at the time. He has a way of making even the most offensive topic hilarious.

I was very amazed by the diversity in the audience. Every kind of person was there, from teenagers to white-headed grandmothers. I was very amazed to see how many different “categories” of people enjoy this man’s comedy and paid money to come and see him. I haven’t heard so much laughter in one place before!

Of course, there also were the audience members that probably didn’t watch any Carlin prior to coming to the concert. I definitely recommend that anyone interested in seeing Carlin live rent “George’s Best Stuff” and watch that prior to purchasing tickets. If you can handle the 7 Wods You Can’t Say on Television and the other great parts of the show, then you would enjoy him live. If you can’t handle him relating the American government to a national orgy with everyone jacking each other off, then I would find another comic to watch. Audience members need to be able to handle those excessive and sometimes brutal connections that he makes.

There were a few people that got up and walked out, and the elderly ladies in front of us kept looking at each other with a look of disgust on their faces. Also, you can only imagine how silent the crowd became when he started talking about gays in the military. We live in a VERY conservative area (which drives me crazy, but let’s not get into THAT!) so I was not too terribly surprised. It didn’t matter, though, because Mom and I had an absolute blast and cracked up at everything, “hot topic” or not.

The man is truly brilliant. I had a fabulous time.

Also, Dennis Blair opened for him, and he was an absolute riot. I definitely recommend checking him out as well.
